Get Notified When Auroras Appear

  1. Add page to home screen:
    • On iPhone → open this page in Safari and tap the Share Share icon icon, then choose Add to Home Screen
    • On Android → open this page in Chrome and tap the menu in the top right and select Add to Home screen. Chrome might even suggest it automatically.
  2. Open the app and tap “Turn On Alerts” and allow location and notification access when asked.
  3. Your coordinates are stored securely so we can estimate aurora visibility in your area.
  4. If auroras are likely, you’ll get a push notification. You only get one alert per event, but lights usually last for hours.
  5. Tap the green button again if you move or travel. That updates your location.
  6. Tap the red button to turn off alerts and be completely removed from our system.

How Aurora Tracker Works

Aurora Tracker keeps an eye on geomagnetic activity around the world and alerts you when the Northern Lights might be visible from your location.

The system gathers live data from space weather services and calculates how far the auroral oval extends based on the current Kp index, a global measure of geomagnetic disturbance.

Your position is compared to the edge of this auroral zone using precise geographic formulas (yes, real math stolen from very skilled mathematicians!). If conditions look promising, Aurora Tracker sends you a notification so you don’t miss the show in the sky.
